The \u003cstrong\u003eArch of Peace\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cem\u003eArch del Sempion\u003c\/em\u003e in Milanese, dominates the scene with its complex, layered history. Its foundation stone was laid in \u003cstrong\u003e1807\u003c\/strong\u003e, when Milan was the capital of the \u003cstrong\u003eNapoleonic Kingdom of Italy\u003c\/strong\u003e: the arch was meant to celebrate Napoleon’s victories. With the emperor’s fall in 1814, construction halted, only to resume in 1826 under Austrian rule, which altered its meaning by dedicating it to the European peace established by the \u003cstrong\u003eCongress of Vienna\u003c\/strong\u003e in \u003cstrong\u003e1815\u003c\/strong\u003e. The monument was inaugurated in 1838 by Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria, becoming a symbol of the Restoration.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was in \u003cstrong\u003e1859\u003c\/strong\u003e, however, that the monument found its definitive consecration: the joint entrance of Napoleon III and Victor Emmanuel II, following the \u003cstrong\u003evictory at Magenta\u003c\/strong\u003e, transformed the arch into an emblem of the Risorgimento.
